Unemployment lower than expected Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures for December 2009 showed 36,000 new jobs in education, health and public administration, and 13,000 more jobs in the hotel and restaurants sector. The number of youth JSA claimants fell by 6,600 in December. ONS figures also showed that: · the number of people unemployed was 2.46 million (down by 7,000) · the number of people claiming Jobseeker's allowance (JSA) was 1.606 million (down by 15,200) Minister for Employment Jim Knight, said: "These figures show the largest number of people coming off unemployment benefit for 15 years. This is a sign that our £5 billion investment to get people back to work is having an impact."
