Jobs: help, training and support for jobseekers

Recent employment figures showed a surprise drop in the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). If you're looking for work, read on for more information to help you find a job, get training and claim financial support.

Unemployment lower than expected

Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures for December 2009 showed 36,000 new jobs in education, health and public administration, and 13,000 more jobs in the hotel and restaurants sector.

The number of youth JSA claimants fell by 6,600 in December. ONS figures also showed that:

·         the number of people unemployed was 2.46 million (down by 7,000)

·         the number of people claiming Jobseeker's allowance (JSA) was 1.606 million (down by 15,200)

Minister for Employment Jim Knight, said: "These figures show the largest number of people coming off unemployment benefit for 15 years. This is a sign that our £5 billion investment to get people back to work is having an impact."

Higher-quality part-time jobs needed for women

10/02/2010Women need more high-quality part-time jobs, according to the new cross-government women's employment strategy.

With 42 per cent of working women (approximately 5.8 million) moving into part-time work, better provisions need to be made for them and for men in care to stop them having to downgrade their careers, the group said.

Vera Baird, solicitor general and lead minister for the Equality Bill, called for flexible working to become the norm and for the "outdated assumption" that the 40/40/40 work model is the top career choice.

This alludes to working 40-plus hours, for 40-plus weeks, for 40-plus years.

Ms Baird added: "This is important for women, who still have the majority of caring responsibilities at home, but need and want to work. By not opening up more senior roles to part-time work, business is missing a trick. We can't miss tricks when our economy needs vigorously to re-grow after the recession.

"More than half of all women in part-time employment are working below their potential, and a shortage of suitable opportunities means that women are crowded into a narrow range of lower paid part-time jobs."

Recent figures show that the overall gender pay gap in the UK currently sits at 22 per cent, but the employment strategy warned that the lower number of working hours that part-time workers do mean that women in these positions receive even less.

How to survive Redundancy!

Always remember it is the “role” that is redundant and not “you” as an individual. It is easy for people to take it personally, but it is never an easy decision for any company to make redundancies.

There are laws that dictate how redundancies should be handled to protect employees, so make sure you know your rights. If there is no alternative job available for you within the company then redundancy may be the only option. You should read your company handbook or speak to an organisation such as the Citizens Advice Bureau to make sure that your employer is following the right procedure.

Make sure that your CV is always up to date. If you need help with your C.V. there are services available to help you design one. www.cvchecker.com is worth checking out.
